Regulatory News Roundup
The latest news about regulatory agencies around the country
Mich. Gov. Vetoes Licensing Compact Bills
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vetoed a pair of bills in December that would have had Michigan join multistate licensing compacts for nurses and psychologists. Whitmer argued that joining the compacts would require Michigan to “cede its sovereign interest in regulating health professions,” Mibiz.com reports.

Ark. Panel: Eliminate Licensing for Sprinkler Fitters, Others
An Arkansas legislative panel has recommended that the state General Assembly repeal occupational licensing requirements for a variety of jobs. These include sprinkler fitters and people who sell new recreational vehicles, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports. The recommendations are likely to be introduced during the 2021 regular session, which begins Jan. 11.

Many Law Grads Skip Bar through COVID Programs
More than 1,000 recent law school graduates have opted to practice law without taking the bar exam, according to Bloomberg Law. They have been allowed to do this through COVID-related emergency programs enacted in four states and Washington, D.C. The willingness of some large firms to hire lawyers who haven’t passed the bar could help to make temporary diploma programs permanent, the journalism site reports.

Okla. Child-Welfare System Making Progress, Say Monitors
Oklahoma’s child-welfare system is making progress toward most goals listed in a settlement agreement that ended a federal class-action lawsuit in 2012, say experts who monitor the agreement. The only exception, reports the Tulsa World, involves “good-faith efforts” to measure how long it takes to make long-term arrangements for children in the custody of the state Department of Human Services.

Wyo. to Ease Restaurant, Bar Restrictions
Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon will soon allow the state’s bars and restaurants to remain open after 10 p.m., his office announced Jan. 2. Gordon decided to reverse a state shutdown order because fewer Wyoming residents are being hospitalized with COVID, the Casper Star Tribune reports.

GL Suite Emphasizes Accessibility
The GL Suite application is designed to support regulatory officials and members of the public regardless of visual impairment. Public-facing websites, developed to meet ADA standards, can be used with screen-reading software and other assistive technologies. So can GL Suite’s back-office system.

Lori Thompson is a licensing specialist with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, which regulates people and facilities that ship or dispense drugs. As a lead for the agency’s front-office staff, Lori plays a crucial public-safety role by processing complaints.

Lori, who is visually impaired, navigates the back-office system using a third-party screen reader known as Job Access With Speech – JAWS for short. The current version of GL Suite is fully compatible with JAWS, which allows users to navigate by using hot keys rather than a mouse and provides spoken feedback.

“I now can swiftly navigate and perform my responsibilities in an efficient and timely manner,” says Thompson. “There are times when my navigation of the system is faster than my sighted peers.”

GL Solutions software follows ARIA (Accessibility for Rich Internet Application) standards and WCAG 2.0 level AA guidelines. It also complies with Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Schedule Inspections by Location to Save Time, Money
Do your agency’s inspectors miss appointments?

Does your agency sometimes pay unnecessary overtime and mileage because inspections are not mapped and scheduled efficiently?

If so, you need mobile inspection functionality that schedules inspections according to location.

Don’t rely on guesswork

Too often, inspectors review a list of appointments and allow guesswork to determine their routes of travel. This inevitably leads to late or missed appointments along with wasted time and gas – for which your agency pays.

GL Suite’s mobile inspections application creates inspection schedules organized by location, ensuring that inspectors make their appointments and maximize their time in the field.
